Announcement concerning the plant nursery

The government announced on 23rd March that outlets selling non essential goods are required to close to the public.

To comply with this we are now entering a period of closure for the plant nursery however we are still carrying on with the growing of all the plants as usual.

We hope to set up a delivery service very soon and hopefully, with guidance from the relevant authorities an order and collect service.

Our tomatoes and cucumbers will be ready as usual at the beginning of May and we will be open at the nursery then to allow their sale.

Latest news.

We are compiling a list of plants that are ready to be delivered locally.

Since it is still early in the season it will be limited at first.

The list when ready will be posted on our "what we sell " page.

The idea is for customers to compile an order and send it to us preferably by using the website form. We will telephone you to take payment and arrange delivery.

Welcome to the website of Metcalfes plant centre the home of quality garden plants all grown here by ourselves and sold direct to the public at realistic prices.

Metcalfes is a small family run business started by Tony and Marion Metcalfe in the 1950s.

The business has grown from just a few wooden greenhouses to over an acre of modern glass heated by carbon neutral biomass fuel.

Up to 1998 the glasshouses and the surrounding land were used to grow vegetables, lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers for the wholesale markets. But the closure of many small local shops forced us to change to the production of ornamental garden plants sold direct to the public.

Because our tomato growing past left us with high quality glasshouses equipped with computer controlled environment we were able to move into garden plant growing on a very efficient scale. This allowed us to produce top quality plants and retail them at very competative prices.

We still devote 25% of the glasshouses for the production of quality tomatoes and cucumbers for sale on the nursery and at our fruit shop at Pickering. See our tomato growing page.
